Laïka 2022
Grown by Pierre Ménard, Sauvignon blanc from the old vines of Clos de La Roche in Faye d'Anjou joined since 2019 by grapes from young neighboring vines and from the far east of Clos des Mailles where there is also a little Sauvignon gris.
The old vines of Clos de La Roche are among the first arrivals of this grape variety in Anjou in the early 1960s and were planted on a schist hilltop. This unusual terroir for a Loire Sauvignon Blanc erases the expression of the grape variety and instead expresses the structure of the schists, almost like a Chenin.
Harvested manually, the grapes undergo gentle pneumatic pressing, fermentation, and aging in barrels, stoneware jars, and vats.
The name pays tribute to a spirit of adventure and to the extraordinary but tragic story of Laïka, the little dog who was the first living being sent into space.
This is a light bodied natural white wine.
