Rosa Solera is the pink counterpart to Hannes and Claudiu's white, and it works the same way: a solera that blends across years, half of every vintage held back as a perpetual reserve so the wine carries no single date. The base is a field of red and white grapes together, Portugieser, Dornfelder, Grauburgunder and Müller-Thurgau co-fermented with direct-pressed Spätburgunder and Muscat, drawn from 2020 onward and topped up each year, including the frost-hit 2021 that took most of the crop. Organic and biodynamic on granite in the South Pfalz, unfined, unfiltered, no sulphur added. Pale and dry, red-berried and lightly tannic, with a savoury depth the multi-vintage blend gives it. Chill it well.

Pairing Suggestions

A rosé built from several vintages at once, which gives it more to say than most.
Tart enough for chilli and lime: nasi kerabu, or a plate of laab moo.
Or cold cuts and pickled cucumber, with no plan beyond that.

About Hannes und Claudiu

Hannes Bergdoll and Claudiu Dumea met in Frankfurt, where Claudiu still runs a wine bar called Espresso Espresso. When they decided to try making wine rather than only pouring it, Hannes' family handed over a portion of their vines to find out what would happen.

They work in the South Pfalz around Landau, on granite, with the Palatinate Forest at their back, farming organically and biodynamically. The plantings run wide: Riesling, Scheurebe, Silvaner, Müller-Thurgau, Gelber Muskateller, Huxel, Weissburgunder, Grauburgunder, Chardonnay, Spätburgunder, Dornfelder and Blauer Portugieser.

The wines that carry Solera in the name are blended across several vintages rather than made from one, which is why they arrive without a year on the label. Everything ferments spontaneously, nothing is fined or filtered, and no sulphur goes in at any stage. The results are tart, energetic and easy to keep drinking.
