La Haute Ronzé 2019

Beaujolais, France · Red wine

La Haute Ronze is a lieu-dit in Régnié, close to the Morgon border in the north of the cru. What separates this parcel from Nicolas Chemarin's lighter cuvées is the soil. Here the sandy pink granite gives way to deeper, clay-rich earth, and the Gamay off it comes out more structured and more complex as a result. At 400 metres the vines give small yields of concentrated fruit, which Nicolas macerates for around twenty days before splitting the wine between temperature-controlled concrete and old oak barrels for an extended raising. The result carries bright cherry and raspberry, a firm but fine structure, elegant spice and a persistent line of acidity. Close in spirit to a well-made Morgon. It drinks beautifully now and will only improve over the next three to five years.
