MTH 2022
Franconia, Germany · White wine
MTH is Müller-Thurgau, a grape nobody takes seriously, off vines sixty years old, which is where Andi Weigand starts making his point. He farms ten Naturland-certified hectares at Iphofen in Franken and treats the vineyard as a single organism rather than a set of rows. This is pressed on a basket press from the 1920s and fermented in sixty-year-old oak, old wood and old vines left to get on with it. Unfiltered, no sulphur added. Pear and white blossom, a little waxy texture, and the quiet depth that comes of asking an underrated grape to do more than it usually gets asked. Cold, and without ceremony.
