Coline 2021

Domaine de la Sarazinière make Coline in both colours, and this is the red: Gamay, grown at Bussières in the Mâconnais. Philippe and Guillaume Trébignaud work eleven hectares across more than two dozen parcels on an estate founded in 1926 by Claude Seigneuret, whose ungrafted Chardonnay is still standing. Picking is by hand, fermentation runs on native yeasts, sulphur is kept low, and the domaine has been converting to organic certification since 2018. Gamay on this clay-limestone behaves quite differently from Gamay on Beaujolais granite. It comes out lighter framed and more red-fruited, with a chalky mineral undertow and a savoury finish. Serve it a touch cooler than room temperature.
