Spätburgunder 2018
Michael Völker and Melanie Drese came back to Kitzingen in 2013 to take on the winery Michael's father had built, working vines he had already turned organic in the 1990s. Franconia is not where most people go looking for Pinot Noir, which is a good part of the appeal. This is Spätburgunder grown on Franconian ground and handled the way they handle everything here: nothing filtered, no sulphur added. It is pale and savoury rather than plush, sour cherry and dried herbs sitting over a faintly earthy grip. With years behind it now, it has grown into itself.
