Jiangpo Chardonnay 2023
Jiangpo Chardonnay comes from Jiangpo Village, a remote Tibetan settlement perched between 2,700 and 2,900 metres above sea level in Shangri-La. Accessible by a single winding mountain road, the vineyards sit in an open, sunlit amphitheater, exposed to constant mountain winds. This is widely regarded as one of the highest-altitude Chardonnay vineyards in the world and among the most distinctive sites in the region.
The 2023 growing season provided exceptional conditions. A dry, warm early season ensured healthy vine development, followed by ideal day and night temperature variation during ripening, allowing the grapes to reach full maturity while retaining natural acidity and precision. These conditions form the backbone of a Chardonnay that speaks clearly of China’s high plateau.
The grapes were hand harvested and quickly crushed and pressed before fermenting in neutral oak barrels. Cold winter nights slowed fermentation naturally, extending it to 20 days. Towards the end of fermentation, lees stirring was carried out to build texture and integration. The wine was then aged sur lie for 14 months, without fining and only lightly filtered before bottling.
In the glass, Jiangpo Chardonnay is focused and structured, with notes of citrus peel, stone fruit, subtle creaminess, and a saline finish all while retaining freshness. The palate is linear yet layered, combining tension, quiet depth, and a long, mineral finish. This is Chardonnay shaped not by richness or oak, but by altitude, climate, and time.
This is a full bodied natural white wine.
