Period, Period 2020
Hebei, China · Red Wine · Medium Bodied
Period, Period is Chengzi at his most patient: a single-plot Marselan from the Great Wall foothills of Huailai, Hebei, given forty months to settle in old oak before release. Marselan, a crossing of Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache, has quietly become one of China's most exciting grapes, and here it grows on land he farms biodynamically, with the same refusal to intervene that has defined his wines since 2013. Organic, hand-picked, wild-yeast fermented, unfined, unfiltered and without a trace of added sulphur. The long ageing shows: dark plum and blackberry softened into something supple and savoury, with fine tannins and a calm, mineral finish. A full stop, twice over, and worth the wait.
