The mountains make demanding winemakers. Short growing seasons, unpredictable harvests, thin soils on steep ground — none of it is easy, and the wines that come out of it tend to carry that character. Something taut, something mineral, a kind of energy that flatter land rarely produces.
This selection draws from two ranges of the French Alps. From the Jura plateau, Domaine de la Renardière and Domaine Ratte work the same limestone ridge from different angles — Renardière with whites of uncommon precision, Ratte with reds that are light-footed and alive. From the Bugey foothills at the edge of Savoie, Grégoire Perron of La Combe aux Rêves tends over twenty parcels across the Jura massif, fermenting in barrels, amphora, and buried qvevri, making wines that feel like the landscape they come from.
These are not wines built for comfort. They are built for the table, for curiosity, and for the kind of drinking that stays with you.
